Course Description: Esports for K-12 and Afterschool Programs
Esports presents a unique opportunity to engage K-12 students by using gaming, something many students already have an interest in, and incorporating the positive outcomes usually associated with team sports. Whether you’re an educator looking to start an esports program at your school or work in another organization that wants to take advantage of the benefits that an esports program can provide, this course will equip you with everything you need to know to launch and sustain a program.
Is This Course For You?
This course was designed for educators, coaches, community leaders, and esports enthusiasts with at least a high school reading and writing level and an interest in esports. To take this course, you must have foundational knowledge about esports, including an awareness of games and gaming platforms. If you don’t have foundational knowledge, we recommend taking at least the first two core courses in the Esports Coaching Mastery Certificate, the Fundamentals of Esports and Coaching Fundamentals.
What You’ll Learn
In this course you will explore the integration of esports into K-12 education and afterschool programs, emphasizing the education benefits of esports through the use of popular video games, including SEL, CTE, and workforce-development skills. You’ll learn how to increase student engagement and integrate esports into the classroom, as well as understand competitive esports programs in the K-12 ecosystem. You’ll get hands-on experience with every part of the process of developing a comprehensive esports program for K-12 students in both a school and afterschool organization and walk away with a fully developed plan for a program.
How You’ll Learn
This eight week course is fully online with synchronous sessions that include lectures, curriculum development, practical implementation, and more. You’ll be developing your toolkit to create a comprehensive program through activities such as utilizing existing methodology for assessing SEL and student engagement, exploring different esports programs for implementation including tournament, programming, and streaming activities, and assessing an esports program in a real educational setting and evaluate it for readiness for implementation. The course will culminate in you developing a comprehensive esports program for a K-12 school or afterschool organization.

- Understand the educational benefits of esports in K-12 and afterschool settings, including SEL, CTE, and skill development for today’s workforce.
