STUDENTS
Esports can open many doors for you. Colleges are now offering scholarship opportunities to grow their esports programs and this can lead to careers in esports. College coaches look for good grades and a strong work ethic in addition to gaming skills. To put yourself in a good position to receive interest from college programs, it is important to pursue gaming in a healthy, well-rounded way. Here are some tips.
Proper Gaming Set-Up
Regardless of the console you are playing on, ensure that it is set up in a comfortable way so you can play to your full potential. If you are playing at a desk, make sure you can comfortably reach your keyboard and mouse. Try raising your screen to encourage better posture.
Clean Work Environment
It is easy to fall into the habit of eating and drinking at your gaming station. While there is nothing wrong with staying hydrated, make sure that the drinks and food don’t pile up!
Comfortable Clothing
In your ‘typical’ sports team, you play and practice in your team’s uniform. It’s important to have comfortable gaming clothes to play in and maybe even a specific outfit for your tournaments.
Time Management
Professional players are not practicing 24/7. Before you sit down to play, try to organize your responsibilities for the rest of your day. If you can’t accomplish everything you need to do within the time you have left in the day, reevaluate your gaming time to ensure you can get everything else done as well.
Managing Screen Time
Outside of school and work screen time should be around 2-4 hours. This is plenty of time to enjoy some practice without straining your eyes or exhausting your skills. Remember that progress does not always happen overnight and sometimes it is better to stop while you’re ahead.
Staying Fueled
You can’t play if you aren’t feeling well. Make sure you stay hydrated while playing by keeping a water bottle close to your station. Between games try to have a healthy snack, like fruit or a granola bar.
Headphone Sound Levels
When using headphones ensure that they are at a comfortable level, preferably medium to low sound levels. Listening to your teammates is important, but not when it can damage your hearing.
Stretch Breaks
Try to get up and stretch your legs once every hour. Aim for one minute of standing during every hour of sitting. Stretch and rotate your wrists to increase blood flow and prevent injuries.
Prevent Eye Strain
To prevent eye strain practice the 20/20/20 rule, every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Not everyone feels the strain from the blue light on their eyes in the same way, but some are more susceptible to it than others. If you are noticing eye strain, but do not want to cut down any more on screen time, you could try blue light glasses or turning your screen’s brightness down.
Limit Number of Games
Soccer, basketball, and football teams never play more than one game a day. They limit themselves to ensure they don’t experience fatigue. Learn your limits as to how many games you can realistically play without draining yourself. It’s better to play two games to your best ability than eight games with waning skills.
Healthy Sleep Schedule
It is so easy to lose track of time and play until the late hours of the night. However, it is important to get a healthy 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Try to schedule your day so you can have an hour before bed to wind down without screen time.
Staying Social
Although gaming is often done in a solo environment, it is important to gain a sense of community when gaming. Try joining a league to meet other players or see if there is a local gaming cafe in your area. Making new friends in esports is a great way to learn and share new techniques and methods.
