Course Description: Business Management in Esports

Running a successful esports program goes beyond being an effective coach and having the right equipment. There is a business element in the world of esports that you need to understand if you want to grow your program and give your team more opportunities. In this course, you’ll learn about the business side of esports from marketing to sponsorships to event management, culminating in creating a formal proposal for a simulated esports event.

Is This Course For You?

This course was designed for educators, coaches, community leaders, and esports enthusiasts with at least a high school reading and writing level and an interest in esports. To take this course, you must have foundational knowledge about esports, including an awareness of games and gaming platforms. If you don’t have foundational knowledge, we recommend taking at least the first two core courses in the Esports Coaching Mastery Certificate Program, the Fundamentals of Esports and Coaching Fundamentals.

What You’ll Learn

In this course, you’ll learn about the business aspects of the esports industry, including marketing, sponsorship, event management, and team organization. Throughout the course, you’ll get an opportunity to create a variety of materials to support the launch of an esports program, including the development of a sustainability plan, marketing plan, and detailed business proposal. You’ll walk away from this course with an understanding of what the key components of business management are for esports as well as how to use those components to create a business plan for your program.

How You’ll Learn

Throughout this fully online twelve week course, you’ll engage in synchronous sessions that include lectures, case studies, and group projects to give you a chance to build a strong foundation of business management techniques and skills you can apply to your esports program. Class activities will include creating a sustainability plan for an esports program, including timeline, goals, budget, program management, and a technology assessment, creating a marketing plan for an esports program, developing a pitch deck for sponsors and partners, and more. The content you’ll work on throughout the course will culminate in the creation of a proposal for a simulated esports event where you can demonstrate your new business management skills in the form of both a written report and a formal presentation.

Skills You Will Develop

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the key components of business management in esports, including marketing, sponsorship, event management, digital assets, team organization, and AV and technology.
  • Run an effective esports program in a given context, such as in a school, after-school program, or community organization.
  • Showcase your skills in team organization and management.
